I think all of us, at least one time, have mistaken from our left side and right side. The ability to do this is a complex neuropsychological process that involves the ability to integrate visual and sensory information, language function and memory (Gormley, 2015). So as you can see it’s not that simple as it seems.
A major problem with this has occurred in the field of medicine in surgery. A study has been made to several med students to see if they can properly discriminate between left and right in a stressful situation. Being at an office or hospital is a stressful job and people should have the capacity to work under pressure. The studies revealed that most of the students didn’t answer correctly while causing a distraction (Gormley, 2015).
A lot of them used alternative techniques to distinguish correctly between right and left. Like placing their left thumb at right angles over their index finger making an “L” indicating the left (Gormley,2015). These strategies tend to fail anyways, so it is a challenge and a risk to distinguish wrong from sides, in any critical job that requires you to care for others.
