Welcome!
My name is Adrianna P. Matos and I am the founder of #PrettyIncredible. During my senior year of undergrad, I was required to complete forty hours of community service in the setting of my choosing. I am a big believer that if you do only one thing, it is of utmost importance to do it incredibly well.
I was really struggling to find an initiative that filled me with purpose when I stumbled with an inspiring speech by GoldieBlox CEO Debbie Sterling. Here she spoke earnestly about gender inequality in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields and how she strived to change the situation at hand by creating an engineering toy targeted to girls. In that moment I realized I had to teach girls all about fields related to STEM and #PrettyIncredible was born. At the end of my forty hours of community service I knew I found my calling and it was to teach and to empower girls of their self worth and how they too can shine in STEM. In collaboration with the Honors Program at The University of Puerto Rico in Aguadilla, #PrettyIncredible is now able to operate better than never before. A group of brilliant and driven students work together to make STEM fun and entertaining for our audience by designing classes and experiments for our #PrettyIncredible girls. Feel free to explore our website for STEM related posts, influential women in STEM and general inspiration for the scientist, engineering, tech master and mathematician in you. |
Mission#PrettyIncredible is a program that focuses on introducing the topics of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to girls ages 9-12 in public schools in Puerto Rico. Statistics show that these fields are predominantly male dominant and we believe that girls have the right to actively pursue these fields, as do their male counterparts. In conjunction with the Honor Studies Program at the University of Puerto Rico in Aguadilla, #PrettyIncredible intends to end disparities in gender one classroom at a time.
